Blood is a living tissue which is liquid in nature. It is made up of four components - plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. Every component has different function in body. The whole blood is a mixture of about 55% plasma and 45% blood cells. Blood constitute about 7-8 % of our body weight. Study of blood and their related disorders is called hematology.

According to Ayurveda, blood is considered as Jiva (life) - 'रक्तो जीव इतिस्थिति:' as per ayurveda, blood is one of dhatus (body tissues) among 7 dhatus. Ayurveda explains that oxygen is carried by blood to all the cells - 'प्राणा:शोणितं अनुवर्तन्ते'.
Anemia is called Panduroga (pandu means white) as per Ayurveda. In this condition, the color of skin and mucous membrane looks white. When haemoglobin content in blood decreases it affects the functioning of whole body. In India 70% pregnant (women and children) and 40% males get affected with anemia. Blood is related with pitta doshas. Anemia is a disorder related with blood due to pitta imbalance.
